I'm trying to work my way through some of the collective noun of podcasts that I've downloaded over the past few years. One, a 2007 interview with archaeologist Wolf-Dietrich Niemeier, is still available to download, and as a transcript:

New Light on the Greek 'Dark Age'

My ears pricked up at the mention that before Athena was a Greek goddess, she was a Mycenean goddess, and possibly a Minoan goddess before that. And she's not the only Olympian whose name appears in Linear B. I had no idea. V. interesting!

Not sure how much knowledge you have of the Hellenic pantheon, but a lot of the gods, at least those that have deep roots with the Greeks, were Mycenean, which in itself is thrilling to read mythology from that time and wonder "Is that...? No, it can't be!".

Dionysos is also one of the gods mentioned in Linear B. Although truth be told I would not have expected Athena to be Mycenean.

Alas, my knowledge of Greek myth is pretty spotty! But yeah, of all the deities to not originally come from Athens! :D The podcast reckons at least eight of the twelve Olympian gods turn up in Linear B. Blimey!
