The idea of "sacred prostitution" has taken a serious knocking (so to speak) in recent years, as feminist academics re-examine the evidence, discovering that their forebears have translated every word for "priestess" as "whore". One of these days I'll get around to the enormous series of postings I plan to make on the subject! %)
